In the article “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A’s” by Brent Staples, the issue of colleges giving students A’s is brought forth. The reasons stated for this is to help the course, school, or community by giving more students A’s.

If a course might be cancelled the department will give the students A’s to help the poor attendance. In the article it states, “The most vulnerable teachers are the part-timers who have no job security and who now teach more than half of all college courses.” (par.4). If a teacher is part-time and has no job security, to help them and the course they are teaching to look better they give the students better grades. Some students even sue to have their grades revised. I believe that suing a teacher to revise their grade is an unprofessional way to handle the problem. If a student is concerned about his or her grade, they should have kept up with their progress through out the entire semester. If the school doesn’t have a good academic status they will give their students better grades. I don’t think Lander, for what I have seen almost a year, gives “free” grades away.

Staples states, “Twenty years students grumbled, then lived with the grades they were given.” (par.7) She goes on to say that,” Today, college of every stature permits them to appeal low grades though deans or permanent boards of inquiry.” Today, more students complain because they are lazy and irresponsible. Like the above example, students do not keep up with their grades and wait until the last minute to show improvement hoping to be satisfied with their grade. The community status also can be increased by the rise in the community’s academic performance as a whole. In result, more people will move into the community because of the schools ratings. In conclusion, do you think Lander is associated with giving “free” grades and why?

I don't think Lander teachers give away A's, or if they do, I have not really been a recipient. I have worked my tail off for the grades I get, while trying to keep a job and get ready for marriage.

For the most part, I feel like the grades I get are fair, or if they are unfair, they are a little low.

This is not to say that if I get a low grade, it is unfair. All I can do is give it my best shot.

And if I flunk out of college, at least I tried.
