Why not men?
In Tannen's essay, she talks about how "There is no unmarked woman". Although i agree with this statement, it wasn't this that caught my eye in the essay. In one part of it she says that she considers all men to be unmarked. After reading this part of the essay it stuck in my head how wrong she actually is.
Although men do not put on make-up, and have many different hairstyles this does not make them unmarked. I think women are marked in there own ways, while men are marked in others.
So what does marked really mean? Does it mean that you put on make-up or have many hairstyles as Tannen states? In my opinion, i dont think this is the only way someone can be marked. To me, I would say that everyone is marked in his or her own personal way. There are no two people on earth that look exactly alike. Shouldn't this mean they are marked?
Although i agree with Tannen that people are marked when they put on make-up and style their hair a certain way, I think people are marked by little things such as their appearance, hair color, eye color, being big, small, tall, or skinny. So why are men not in this category?

I don't think that she is including in her essay the small things that we would consider distinguish a person. I think she is merely concentrating on appearance.
I do agree with her that most men don't give alot about who they are through their clothing, but even this is starting to change in modern day society.
Women are not only marked in their own eyes but in everyone else's because a woman who is dressed in a sloppy manner says something about her, but when a man dresses the same way there is not much to say about who he is.
I agree with you amanda when you say that men don't give alot of information about them so really they can't become marked. As for females we get marked about the way we dress and the way we live ourlives.
I love the statement you made about how everyone is different, therefore everyone is marked. I agree with you there. I comlpletely think that there are distinguishing features about every person that makes them different. If this was your interpretation of hat "marked" means, then I absolutely believe that men and women are marked.
I agree with you all, most men do not care about their appearence in any sort of way. As Tannen stated, men have standards, therefore proving that they can be unmarked. But Tannen states that men can be classifie as marked in some situations, not that all men are unmarked.
I do agree with Ryan and Rebekah though, that everyone is different so therefore evryone can be considered marked.
I totally agree! Men are marked in their own ways. Men can be marked by having on a foul smelling cologne. There are many diffrent ways that diffrent people can be marked. Women can be marked by having on too much makeup, and men can be marked by wearing the wrong color suit to a metting or even on a date with his girlfriend.
I completely agree with you when you said that men are also marked. Even if many men are all wearing suits, you can tell if they’re trying to look conservative or modern only by the color of their suits, shirts, and ties. In my opinion, it is completely wrong to state that only women are marked. The same way that Tannen described the way that the blond woman talked, men also act in ways that tell us a lot about their personalities.
Ryan I agree with you. Everyone is marked in their own individual ways. Hairstyles, clothing and even their race marks them.
The difference though between men and woman being marked is usually when woman are marked it it usually always appearence based, due to what they wear or don't wear. Woman are marked as "adding" things to themselves such as makeup to cover up who they really are and are marked by males and females.
Men are usually marked by females, more so than males.
I think that the reason she doesnt refer to man as being unmarked is because they have a standard hairstyle, a standard fashion stlye etc. Women do not. Just go to a resturant or even look at the girls in your classes no 2 girls have the same hairstlye or clothes on!
I agree with you ryan. What does make a person marked or unmarked. People can be marked in many different ways including make up or hair styles. I believe though that everyone can be considered marked because everyone is different and no two people are the same.
I agree with you ryan, people are very different and in there own way marked. however women are unmarked as well. you see a blonde hair blue eyed girl most people will glance at her and think typical american girl. which if you ask me is very unmarked
