"PRO TECT YO KITCH'N"...What??

Wow! This is probably the worst article I have ever read in my entire life. Verta Mae comes right out and saids that he is not a writer, but he is a rapper. He continues to say that as a reader, we should not simply just read the article, but we should "rap it aloud". At this point I double checked the assignment sheet to make sure that I really had to read this. Unfortunately, I did.

Mae starts discussing how the kitchen is beginning to slowly diminish from our homes because of the advances our culture have been making. This is true; restaurants are growing in number, types and locations dramatically. Dietary supplements are also replacing traditional meals. Even though I didn't have too high of an opinion of Mae at first, soon I realized he was a complete moron. He begins to stereotype white people as lazy cooks and the reason for instant food. What an idiot. Instant foods were created because of our fast-paced society, not because white people couldn't cook. He acts as if white people eat totally different foods than black people do. Sure black people like "soul food", but so do white people. I guarentee that I've eaten more fried chitlins in my life than he has. I also guarentee that my grandma( who is white) has made 5 times the amount of pound cakes that he has.

Therefore don't stereotype, it just makes you look like a moron, and Verta Mae is a moron. If you're going to write a rap song, then write a rap song. If your going to write an essay, then write an essay; do not mix the two.

P.S.--Just thought I would throw in this ingenious quote from Mae's essay,"white people discovered terrapins, ate them all up and now they are all but extinct (terrapins)." --Thanks for putting terrapins in parenthesis Mae, you almost had us thinking that white people are almost extinct. Not really...you're a freakin' moron.

Sorry, although Verta sounded like a feminine name, I figured her to be a male because the she said that she was a rapper. However, my opinion does not waiver simply because I now know her correct gender.

I had wondered about that, and I assumed that your mistake was based on Grosvenor's comment that she is a rapper.

The interesting thing, of course, is that she isn't a rapper. You can read a biography about her here.

We mentioned in class that she seems to be using her language to play into a stereotype of black people. Maybe she's doing the same thing with gender.

I completely agree with Nathalie. I hated reading this essay mostly because of the style. I also found her thoughts random which made it even more painful for me to read. When Verta Mae said she wasn't a writer, she was not lieing.

Wow, when I read this I almost died with laughter. I thought I was the only one who felt this way about this essay. That is why when I was sitting in class and a few people were talking about how they liked it I just kept my mouth shut.

I totally agree with you. Verta did make herself sound like a complete idiot which made this essay especially hard for me to read.

Verta Mae's essay was diffcult to read for me as well. I do agree with you Matt her assumption that white people can not cook is not true for every white individual. Just as all black people can not cook, just becasue you are of a certain race does not mean you can or can not cook, and making that sterotype is very ignorant.

While reading this essay I couldn't stay focused and had to start over because of how Verta Mae said we should "rap it aloud." I was so busy trying to make things rhyme and flow smoothly that I wasn't even paying attention to the point. Surely I can't be the only one who has read the same thing and acted the same way. Why did she put in a distraction?

I...couldn't get through the reading very well when I tried. I have the hardest time with dialect. Prose is so much more preferable for me.

I had to keep starting over, just like Tyler did. I kept getting distracted and it was a very hard read. And I didn't like the stereotyping either, really.

I agree with Tyler. It was extremely difficult for me to read. I, too, was trying to rap it and the fact that I have absolutely no rhythm did not help things.

Dispite the style, I did think it was a neat way to put an argument out there.

I have to agree with you Matt, I know plenty of white people who eat the exact same things that black people do and also I know plenty of people of all race who use the instant form of cooking. This doesn't mean that they can't cook maybe they choose not to slave over an hot stove for hours at a time. So I kind of feel like Verda Mae didn't know what she was talking about.
