Is it Really Mens Fault?

In Scott Russell Sander’s starts his essay “Looking at Women” with a fairly long introduction on how he and one of his friends were sitting at a stoplight and saw a fourteen year old girl walk in front of them wearing a very short pair of pink shorts. He goes on describing how she looked, but when he tells of what his friend Norman, who was sitting in the back seat, says about her referring her body to a “chassis” this introduces the true point of his story. Sanders goes on to explain to the reader his own thoughts of how men see women. He wonders if men simply see women as something nice to look at much like some men are to cars. Sanders refers to an incident that happened to him in college when his roommate turned out to subscribe to Playboy magazine. He uses this example to show that how no matter how hard he tried to not look at the pictures his human nature just made him so curious that he ended up looking at the pictures anyway. Something I noticed throughout the essay when Sanders was telling about how the men will look at women in perverted ways it seems that most of the time the women cause the men to look at them that way. For example the girl in the pink shorts she could have worn something with a little more fabric on them, but one reason I notice girls wearing more scandalous clothes is because that is what society makes them think they have to wear to fit in and it is hard to find clothes that aren’t made that way in stores now. The incident with Playboy could be avoided too if the women had more self respect not to pose nude for people too gawk at on a page.
