Time and Money Wasted

Caroline Bird has an interesting opinion in “College is a Waste of Time and Money”. She clearly believes that College is no good because it is very expensive and that students should not have to go to College. Bird gave an example that when children don’t want to go to school they should not go since they might know something the parents don’t know. She suggests that College students should be treated the same way. Bird also talks about how a degree or a certificate or a diploma don’t guarantee you to get a job or the job you want.

I agree that Colleges are getting pretty expensive, making it harder for some people to get an education. However I do believe that College is necessary because you really learn more than what you could if you don’t go to College. On the other hand there are many courses that I think are not even close to necessary and still we, the students, have to take them in order to graduate. To me that is a waste of time and money. Many students start College with general education courses because they don’t know what Major to choose. After a while some of those drop out because they ran out of money paying unnecessary or unwanted courses. I think there should be a program that helps students decide what major is best for them according to their skills, and if there is one already, then they need to spread the word because many don’t know about it.

I do disagree when Bird says that College students should stay home if they want to because many times they are just being lazy, I don’t think it’s because they know something that the parents don’t, they just need discipline. College students should not waste their opportunity for education. Certainly should not waste any time and money!
Do you think College is a waste of time and money?... and who knows what else.

The Worm in The Apple

In "Who Shot Johnny, A Day in The Life of Black America" Debra Dickerson sounds very upset for various reasons. The fact that her nephew was shot must of been very hard for the entire family, specially for Johnny since his life was ruined.

However, that is not why Dickerson is writing this awful experience. There are people in society that just do not care about anything. People who go around with an empty mind and no heart looking for someone to harm.

That is what bothers Dickerson and many other people. I am from Mexico, from a small city named Ciudad Valles. I can relate with Dickerson because even in my hometown I can find people like Johnny's shooter.

I have heard people talk in a mean way about mexicans. I can tell you that not every mexican is like that, but because of those who do wrong, the entire raze gets the blame for it.

It is not just Black America, in Dickerson's case or Mexico, in my case, but in the world, people who seem to enjoy hurting other people. When you see a small worm going through an apple, you usually throw the whole thing away.

Similar to the worms waisting a lot of good things are the people like the shooter holding back the community.

Wrong Substitute

Kenneth A. Bruffee wrote "Binge Drinking as a Substitute for a 'Community of Learning'" since students head to wrong directions in college drinking and having accidents instead of studying and learning what college offers them. A strong reason that Bruffee gives for such behavior of students is because they do not have the ability to make friends. Students rather join fraternities and sororities using them as shields to protect themselves from other students that are not willing to make new friends. Bruffee gives his own experience as an example making his article more persuasive to the reader as well as facts and information that supports his point. He believes that drinking problems with students would go down if colleges would generate social activities in order to make friends. Choosing the wrong substitute for learning is not going to help. Frienship is one solution.
