English the Officail Language

The language spoken by many is the English language. It happens to be the one that we know and the one that we have been taught to speak. The English language is spoken in many different ways and in the future will probably be taken to a new high.

The English language has become a house hold language to Amreicans like chinese has to China and spanish to Spain. In Dennis Baron's essay "Don't Make English Official--Ban It Instead" he says "no one seems to read it much lately, few can spell, and fewer still can't parse it". In other words the English language has become the language that even english teachers would need to use spell checker on the computer. We as Americans tend to misspell words or not even bother to read the english language anymore.

As an English Professor Baron make his proposal seem a little absurd because if the English language was not Official then what would be the language that every one would use. "Chinese is too hard to write, especially if your're not chinese". Which basically means that with all of the immigrants coming the States what would be the language that every one would be able to use.

If the English language is not the Offcaial language then what do you think will be the Official language and is there a need for that language?

Marked or Unmarked that is the question?

In Deborah Tanner's essay "There Is No Unmarked Woman" she feels as if the women are unmarked because they tend not to worry about the eyelashes or makeup.

When I read this essay I had to agree with Tanner because she states that "all married women's surnames are marked" which means that after a woman is married her named changes to a marked surname.

I also had to agree with her when she stated that a woman "has her own name", and that a "married woman who wants to have her cake and eat it too may use her surname plus his". I agreed with her beacause I feel that she is able to have most of the things she wants while maintaining her name.
