Computer Kids

I agree with Neil Postman’s essay Virtual Students, Digital Classroom. In his essay Postman explains what the importance of schools is and how schools rely so much on technology in today’s society.

First of all I think schools are important because they are a means of learning. Schools are also a way of meeting new people and making friends. These are people that will always be there for you. On the other hand technology has also become an essential part of every person’s life. I agree with Postman when he states that today’s society worships technology as a god. I think that his statement is very true. I have heard many of my friends say they would not be able to go through an entire day without their cell phone or laptop. Today our country depends so much on technology that it would be practically impossible to take it all away and expect everything to go normal as always.

Technology has become very important to schools as well. In his essay Postman states, “ School for children of the Information Age will be vastly different than it was for Mom and Dad”. (pr.6) I agree with this statement because it is the truth. Today there are computer classes, teachers ask for essays to be typed, many ask for all of written work to be typed. Math classes use high tech calculators that will do all of the work for you. Kids are learning how to do everything with technology and it sometimes makes it difficult for parents to help if they are not familiar with technology. I know from experience. My parents are not very familiar with computers, in their time there weren’t any computers. Today everything is done on the computer even research.
I think that today everyone relies too much on technology for everything and it shouldn’t be like that.

I agree with you lyzeth because I know for a fact that I didn't know to much about computers untill I got here. I really didn't have no other purpose for a computer but to type. Now their are Myspace, facebook, and all these other little things that involves tecnology. To me I really can't go a day with out my cell phone cause I live 3hours away from my family. Cell phones to me are good in my book but I don't worship none of these un Godly things. So yes I technology has gone to far when their trying to have digital classrooms.

I agree with you Lyzeth becase before I went to Claflin I did not know to much about computers. I knew the basics just like everyone else.

I do think that school is means of learning and meeting new friends because a computer cant talk back when you need to talk to someone about a problem.

There are several points in the blog that I would like to address. First of all, the past generations are not as technogolically advanced. For example, my dad doesn't even know how to work a cell phone. He does good to be able to dial the number and press send in an emergency. It's not that he isn't smart, in fact, he is an optometrist, but it's just that these things were not out when he was our age. In conclusion, I think that as Americans we do rely on techonology entirely too much. Secondly, I believe that a school is a place to learn not only intellectual things but socail skills as well. If the classwork is completely done over the internet the social aspect of the classroom is gone.

I agree with what Lauren said that schools teach more than just English and math. In school you learn how to get along with others and work with others to accomplish tasks. These are very important skills for the real world.

I agree that people do use technology way to much. Today families dont do the things together like they use to mainly because of technology. Cell phones for example are good to use to talk to someone or for emergencies but some people take them way too far and constantly use them non stop and would completly freak out if they lost them.

Like Rachel, I agree with Lauren. Schools teach more than the three "R"'s. They teach social interaction skills. No matter how computerized our society becomes, there will always be a need for social skills.

Virtual classrooms may be the way of the future, but by the time that that future scenario is realized, the social skills that we now equate with school will have changed. There may be no need for face-to-face interactions; my point is that by the time virtual classrooms are common, probably society will have evolved to the same "lack" of interpersonal relationships.

I think that technology has taken over everything. As new student, at Lander, I never really thought that I would have to use the computer so much. You have to check your email,WebCT, and obtain things that professors may send you. Everytime I turn around I'm on the computer everyday it seems like there is no way to get away from it. It is true, computers have become the "God Of Technology".

I think Neil Postman's idea that technology is a god in today's society is not only interesting but also very true. As people who grew up in the 'technology age' we among all others should see the truth of Postman's statement. As Lyzeth pointed computers are becoming more and more integrated in classrooms across the world. Students have 'smart' rooms, high-tech calculators and virtual classrooms. As the years pass people seem to only become more dependent on technology. Because of this dependency, I believe that the question is 'should technology treated as a god' not 'is technology be treated as a god'?

I don't think that technology has become a God. I think that laziness has taken that aspect. I mean what is the point of the new technology, such as cars, cell phones, or computers? Is it not to get things done faster. People want everything done as quickly as possible, but for what reason, to do something else? But it isn't like I don't do the same thing after I get out of classes I'm on my computer checking email, myspace, and facebook just like tammy h.

I don't agree. I grew up with computers, my dad is a computer scientist...and I am an absolute advocator of the technology revolution with computers. I think that with certain things you can teach yourself to do and you don't necessarily need to have human interaction to do it or make it better.

Computers for example. I taught myself basic HTML, and computer graphic making on the computer, and also I don't need a teacher or a class to do it, I had friends online to help me if I needed it.

Lyzetth, I agree with you that society today is relying on technology too much, especially in some aspects in school. The only way to start current on what’s happening in school is to check the school’s website and your e-mail, and all of your billing and class information is found online. I use technology to a greater extent in college than I ever did in high school. Neil Postman’ argument was bit broad making it sound like this was happening in every school. The high school I went to didn’t rely on technology as a main teaching tool.

I agree that Schools are very important as well as technology. They just need to have a balance of classes and computer skills.
It would be very hard to live without technology, but that doesn't mean that we have to worship it as gods.

I agree with Leyzeth and the other blogs that technology has in a way taken over. With cell phones I have a friend who literally can't go without a cell phone she spends most of her day texting and it drives me crazy, and the phonebook feature is pretty bad I mean try to recite at least 5 of your friends phone numbers from memory. Having digital classes is a very bad idea also because the computer is a tool not a teacher. They cannot adapt to everyones individual needs for learning.

I totally agree with you Lyzeth because I know I couldn't make it a day without my cellphone or my laptop. And nowadays it's the thing to do, to always do everything through technology.

I agree. Technology has become so important to me, especially as i get older. I use it more and more. I couldn't imagine living without my cell phone, my computer, or even television.
