College: Beneficial or a Waste

In Caroline Bird’s essay, College is a Waste of Time and Money; she explains that college is not really a smart thing for someone to do. She feels that the only thing you are accomplishing is wasting time and money.

However, I feel that this is not completely true. I believe that college is very beneficial. There are so many things to learn in this world and you can’t find them sitting in your house all day. Bird explains that if you put the money for college in a bank you would have more money than a person that has went to college. That may be true, but who have money for college already saved up to put in a bank right after high school? That is for all four years.

Bird also mentions that even if you have a diploma you can’t do much with it. She states that you are not guaranteed a job. This is a very good point. On the other hand, it just depends on what you are majoring in. It’s smart to major in something that the world needs more of. But many people are majoring in things like psychology and sociology and demands just really aren’t that high for those types of jobs.

The only thing I really agree with in Bird’s essay is that many high school graduates are pressured to go straight into college. It’s like that’s the next expected journey of your life. Many parents, teachers, and guidance counselors are like elementary, middle, high school, college, and then job. But I don’t think it should work like that. I feel that you should come to college when you are ready. I strongly encourage that high school graduates should come to college. It’s a good life experience.

Do you feel that college is beneficial or a waste?
