marked

Women are marked. The nature of women consists of primping and trying to look nice. We constantly think about how our hair looks or how our outfit looks, and most importantly how our makeup looks. These things that we worry about are the things that mark us.

When Tannen uses the term “marked” she refers to the factors that distinguish one woman from another. For instance, there are endless possible hairstyles for women, but for men there aren’t so many. Women have various ways of fixing their hair while men don’t have quite as many options.

Women’s appearances display their character, how they feel, who they are. Men’s appearance doesn’t describe them in this way because, due to having short hair, men look the same when they are sick and when they are happy. However, when women are sick they don’t fix themselves up as much as they normally do when they aren’t’ sick; therefore, it is noticeable whether or not a woman is sick.

Tannen says that “a women whose hair has no particular style is perceived as not caring about how she looks” (pp. 412, 2nd par.). I agree, many times people perceive others who aren’t fixed up as not caring about themselves. I have to say that this is not true. I hardly ever fix myself up, but it’s not because I don’t care; it’s because I’m late everywhere I go. I barely have time to dry my hair, let alone fix it!

I agree with Tannen, I think women have the option of being unmarked. It is just too time-pressuring sometimes to look as though you care about yourself.

I will have to say I agree yet disagree with you Ashley. I agree with you on the aspect of women being marked but I do not think they have the option to be unmarked. I beleive whether a women dresses up or not, does her hair and makeup or put on flats or heels, she will still be marked.

I disagree with the fact that women who take time with themselves and dress up with makeup and all are consumed by time. I do my makeup and hair every morning and I don't use up a lot of time nor do i do it for men apperication.

I also dont think women who don't take time to fix up means that they don't care about themselves, they may not be into that. I do agree with you on that.

How does a woman have an option of being unmarked, may I ask? I agree with you Aunnika. Women are and always will be marked, whether it is a bad or good thing is everybody's own decision.

I think it is also women's privilege to look good. Think about it a minute, a man can't do anything for example if he has a pimple in his face, a woman instead can cover it with make-up.

I agree with you Ashley in your point where you say that looking good needs a lot of time, but I disagree whether looking good is the same thing as taking care. I think that taking care of oneself and looking good go hand in hand.

Women are marked no mater witch way you turn. Most men say they want a women that can cook and clean, well not all wemen can cook so well,me being one. Why can't men cook too? Men are marked for outside activities. There is noting anyone can do it's just a four letter word l-i-f-e!
