Marked or Not Marked
In Deborah Tannen’s essay on, “There Is No Unmarked Woman” talks about woman having there own “mark”. I agree with her statements. As she talks about women and there appearance I come to think women are “marked” but are men? When she describes how women have shoes, such as hills or jewelry and there hair neat or everywhere, I think women defiantly are marked. Men don’t fix there hair and wear “pretty” shoes but they do have there own since of style to them. They do have there own uniqueness about them. Woman take hours getting ready but (most) men take ten minutes. Most men wear what they can find, most women lay out what they are going to wear the night before and still end up wearing something completely different. Me being a female, I can say men are simpler, not as complicated as a woman.
This is not for all cases and for all men and women but, in general yea I would say women are more complex then men. Therefore I believe men are marked, marked for being simple, plain, and at the same time unique in there own way.

I also agree with Tannen's essay. More is expected out of a women and how we dress is the first thing a person notices about us.
I mean in all honesty, the first thing a man notices about a girl is not how smart she is...its how she looks and holds herself that attracts them THEN its their intelligence etc. (Just to be clear, I am not stating that all guys are like this!)
However, I do believe Tannen is mistaken when she says men don't have to worry about being "marked" like women do. Men have to worry about their appearences as well whether it is to impress a girl or for a job interview.
I agree with you Jamie, men and women both are marked. Like you said men don't go through all the preparation that women have to but they are marked like us as well.
I agree with you Jamie men are also marked just as women are marked. Some men wear casual clothes everyday and some dress like bums everyday. So the statment that men are not marked is not a true statment.
I agree with you Jaime J, men are marked for being less complicated than woman, though not all men are like this, but Tannen makes it seems that way. Maybe it’s because of society that women have the pressure to look put-together and some men are considered to get away with just looking decent. I think what’s missing from Tannen’s argument is how men are considered “marked” in their own way.
